Model shift in computing process from centralized computing of main frame era to Internet based distributed architecture of software development has opened the floodgates for small and medium enterprises (SME's) to take advantage of internet as a new, very low cost worldwide communication medium. SME's can now web enable  software solutions of their companies and have similar information process automation capabilities which were so far available to only large sized organizations.  

Distributed Computing Model : Client / Server (LAN / WAN) computing model has taken the next progressive step towards distributed computing with the advent of internet
 System services such as the presentation layer, the business logic layer and the data layer can all be distributed across geographical distances and functionality. Presentation layer itself can be distributed from thin to rich clients. Thin clients could well take the form of wireless remote clients or simply web browsers. Business logic forming the middle layer (eg.: asp, COM, CORBA, etc.) could also be distributed from being immediately behind the client level to being on internet or intranet servers. The data layer could be distributed across external applications, intranet databases and integrated legacy systems. 

  In case of an open environment such as internet, security of information assumes greater importance. Of various methods dealing with the subject of security, creation of virtual private networks (VPN) for data in transit, is being considered as appropriate.
